Scholarship Opportunities
The West Point Island Civic Association (WPICA) is offering four $750 scholarships to graduating high school seniors. The following outlines the criteria and documents needed to be eligible for each scholarship awarded this year.
TO BE ELIGIBLE TO RECIEVE A WPICA SCHOLARSHIP APPLICANTS MUST ALSO:

Be a graduating high school senior.

Demonstrate positive citizenship through service to others through school, church, and community.

Be of good academic standing.

Be planning to attend upon high school graduation a 4-year college/university or a 2-year community college, or a trade/technical school.
WILLIAM S. CAREY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The West Point Island Civic Association is offering a $750 scholarship to a graduating high school senior who is the child or grandchild of a current member of the West Point Island Civic Association. This scholarship was established to honor the memory of William S. Carey, a founding member of the WPICA and leader in the secession movement of West Point Island from Dover Township (currently Toms River) to the Borough of Lavallette. This scholarship requires an essay themed “My Memories of West Point Island.”
EDGAR J. HESS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The West Point Island Civic Association is offering a $750 scholarship to a graduating high school senior who is the child or grandchild of a current member of the West Point Island Civic Association. This scholarship was established, by his family, in memory of Edgar J. Hess who was an active member of the West Point Island Civic Association. This scholarship requires an essay themed “What Have I Done to Make a Difference in My Community” and a letter of recommendation outlining community involvement (“community” need not be limited to Lavallette, NJ.)
WPICA ANNUAL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The West Point Island Civic Association is offering a $750 scholarship to a graduating high school senior who is the child or grandchild of a current member of the West Point Island Civic Association. This scholarship honors those members of WPICA who have passed away since last year’s scholarships were awarded. This scholarship requires an essay themed “My Memories of West Point Island.”
AILEEN M. BAROW MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The West Point Island Civic Association is offering one $750 scholarship to a graduating senior who is a permanent resident of Lavallette, including West Point Island. This scholarship honors the memory of Aileen M. Barow, former President of WPICA and Lavallette Mayor, whose leadership and dedication provided inspiration to all who knew her. This scholarship requires an essay themed “My Memories of Lavallette.”
